On 24 January 2023, FSB officers conducted searches in different villages of the Dzhankoi district of Crimea, targeting Crimean Tatars. As a result, six people were detained and transferred to Simferopol, including Khalil Mambetov. The next day, the court sent all six to pre-trial detention on charges of participating in the activities of a terrorist organisation and preparing for violent seizure of power due to their involvement in the Islamic party "Hizb ut-Tahrir", which is not known for any violent activities. At the pre-trial detention hearing, lawyers who intended to assist the detainees were not allowed to attend, as they were already representing other defendants in the Hizb ut-Tahrir case. A crowd of local residents gathered outside the courthouse, and police detained more than 30 people. Khalil’s wife, who has cancer, said he suffers from osteoarthrosis - but is not receiving any medication. During one of their visits, the couple was forbidden to speak the Crimean Tatar language. On 22 August 2023, the case was transferred to the Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don. On 29 April 2025, Mambetov was sentenced to 14 years in a strict regime colony.
