A case of high treason was initiated against Selyanin on 29 August 2013. He was placed in custody. In August 2015, Selyanin was sentenced to 15 years in a strict regime penal colony. The case was heard in closed mode. In November 2023, it became known that Selyanin was abused in the colony: he was forced to stand in a draught outside in bad weather. This causes his health to deteriorate.
